MONTANA
Before the creation of Montana Territory,various parts of what is now Montana were parts of Oregon Territory(1848-1859), Washington Territory (1853-1863), Idaho Territory (1863-1864), and Dakota Territory (1861-1864).
Montana became a United States territory, The Territory of Montana,during the Civil War, on May 26, 1864. The first territorial capital was at Bannack.The capital moved to Virginia City in1865 and to Helena in1875.
The Cook-Folsom-Peterson Exedition (1869) and the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition (1870) were launched from Helena into the Upper Yellowstone region and directly led to the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872.
The U.S. Congress approved Montana statehood in February 1889 and President Grover Clevelandsigned an omnibus bill granting statehood to Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Washington once the appropriate state constitutions were written. On November 8, 1889, President Benjamin Harrisonproclaimed Montana the 41st state in the Union.
The Treasurer of the Territory of Montana was charged with receiving all money belonging to the Territory and dispersing the same upon receipt of the Auditor\'s warrant. William H. Rodgers served as Auditor from 1867-1874.Richard O. Hickman served as Treasurer of the Territory of Montana from 1871-1875.

I was the handwriting expert contacted in the \"1775 Almanac\" episode on the PBS series \"History Detectives\" which was televised on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. I was asked to identify the writer of the notes handwritten on the pages of the almanac, notes that recorded, among other events, the Battles of Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill. The unknown owner of the almanac had used it as a diary.
