UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES, UNUSUAL POTTERY VASE, PACHL ERA:
$150.00

Offered in this listing isan unusual University ofNorth Dakota School of Mines vase created during the Pachl era (1952-1970) after the departure of MargaretCableashead of the ceramics department. The piece seems very much in line with Pachl\'s encouragement of students to approach pottery as a means of self expression without the restraints that produced the moretraditional wares of Cableyears. This slender vase is oval in horizontal cross section, but it is aslightly twistedoval. It appears to have been wheel thrown, then compressed into an oval and then twisted. It is decorated witha light tan/gray glaze with lighter colored mottling. External grooves spiral upward and there are 4 groups of 3 carved nearly vertical lines. The base edge is quite unusual. It has a ring of pressed arched shapes. The base itself has a wafer of applied material, much like stoneware andmuch coarser than the clay of the vase. On this is ink stamped UND, GRAND FORKS ND in black. It is a little rough at the edges where the arch forms meet the wafer, but all in the making. In addition, on the interior at the top groove there is a short line of glaze roughness, running horizontally for about an inch. I can be felt, but does not penetrate the clay. This also is likely a flaw in the making. Whether itis astudent or faculty piece is unknown, but there is a cross-like form(filled with glaze)cuton the interior base.
