Offering here a very nice and highly ornate Elgin Illinois
Railroad pocket watch. I am really
out of my comfort area here as I am not a watch enthusiast or collector but I
am describing to the best of my ability.
Have also included numerous photographs to show the parts, stampings,
numbering, and other details. I
believe this to a be a Elgin National Watch Company, "Burlington
Route", Grade 387, Railroad Grade pocket. The movement is marked Elgin Nat’l Watch Co., USA, 17 Jewels
and serial numbered Waltham 33717678.
It is an open face design in 16s size. The inside of the case is stamped Illinois in script over
Watch Case Co., Elgin, USA Bona Fide and numbered 8146733. There are several sets of tiny jeweler
inscribed sets of numbers scratched on the inside case: 2229 circle H 69 – 149-32 – 241-33 –
254-39 – 145-42. One really needs
to use a loupe to see them and I do not know what they mean. Perhaps a jeweler’s code and when
serviced? Three-piece "bassine"
type screw back and bezel. The bezels
and center are chased with a very attractive foliate edge pattern. The back plate has a fancy and
attractive lined floral pattern which shows quite a bit of surface wear. White enamel face has bold Arabic
numerals and outer minute dot numerals with one-minute Arabic markers in
black. Every fifth-minute marker
and numerals are in red. Sunken
sub-second dial at bottom and center has “Burlington Route" in red, white,
and black. VERY, very nice. ELGIN in large block letters below the
Burlington designation. Excellent
"Heavy Spade" blued hands. Very nice small circular winding crown with fancy line
texture work. Small oval bow is
also in place. The crystal is
clean and not fogged, cracked or damaged.
The dial is a bright white color and is marked as noted above. There is some finish and age wear to
the bottom of the case and crown area from use and having been carried. Recently purchased at an old estate sale
this watch has not been cleaned or serviced but is setting, running, and
keeping time. One of three old
railroad pocket watches I have listed all which came from the same source. Bargain basement starting price and
listed without reserve. I am
always happy to answer questions or provide further details. I accept returns and will refund the
