Owna piece of history from “The Roaring 20\'s” with this absolutelybeautiful and rare 1929 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. completely restoredradio.
Edisonradios were manufactured for 2 years ONLY.
In1927, Thomas Alva Edison turned over the reins of his company to hisson Charles. In 1929, Thomas A. Edison, Inc. purchased theSplitdorf-Bethlehem Electrical Company (a manufacturer of radios),proceeded to shut down the records division of Edison, and startedmanufacturing radios.
Thislasted for only 2 years, thanks to the Great Depression.
TheR-5 for sale here, manufactured in 1929, was preceded only by modelsR-1, R-2, C-1 and C-2.
Itis a “Neutrodyne” radio, predecessor to the “Superhetrodyne”,finished in walnut, with matching butt-walnut pilasters, and“relieved” with Birdseye maple. It also features the“Light-O-Matic” dial, which glows red when you tune to a pre-setstation. The chassis of the 1929 models were painted green, as thisone is, and the 1930 models were painted gold.
Allwax capacitors have been replaced. Resistor found to be out oftolerance were replaced. Any frayed wiring was replaced. Power cordwas replaced using cloth-covered wire, but with the original plug.
Thewood in this radio is all original, and there is NO evidence ofde-lamination. The tubes all appear to be original “RCA-Cunningham”,and all tested strong. The front knobs on the sliding doors alsoappear to be original.
Thecabinet had to be stripped down because of stains and blemishes, butwas re-stained and finished with 10 coats of hand-rubbednitro-cellulose lacquer, giving it a luster and beauty that surpassesthe original finish. Much of the original patina remains, however. There appear to be blemishes on the front in some of the pictures. However, look at all the pictures and you will see that they are only camera reflections.
Searcharound. See if you can find another example this pristine and withthis historical significance.
