Very rare King Zephyr Special tenor - not to be confused with King Zephyr, Specials were later re-named Super 20 and neck design was changed - but it is the same horn. Zephyr Specials were made before and during the WWII, up to 1945, and replaced by Super 20 in 1945.
This one was made in 1937 (209XXX), and belonged to Harry Allen, the great swing tenor saxophonist.
Full pearls, double-socket neck, three-ring hook, extensive engraving, Harry\'s name and dedication to him in the back. Original lacquer, about 95% there, honey-color.
The pads are very good. Most importantly, the horn has its original mechanics, referred to as \"flute action\", proudly advertised by King in 1937. Indeed, it feels amazing under your fingers.
The Specials\' sound is darker and more focused, compared to Super 20. It also has more power.
I found the intonation extraordinarily good, including all overtones and altissimo register.
It is truly a beauty and a beast in one. You can also find it Here
