Very rarely seen 1778 Hester Bateman Georgian decorated sterling silver creamer:
$324.99

We are listing this fancy very rarely seen 1778 Georgian decorated sterling silver creamer which was made by the renowned female London silversmith Hester Bateman (arguably the most famous silversmith of all time). The creamer is very elegantly shaped, wonderfully decorated with a sharply repousse molded country home scene on one side and an equally sharply repousse molded grazing cow on the other side, and it has an elaborate open cartouche on its front. It also has a very elaborately scrolled handle and deeply punched beaded rim, and it sits on an elegant conical foot with tiny beading around its base edge. The creamer is marked on one side under its rim with a lion passant, a crowned leopard\'s head, the date letter c (used in 1778-1779), and the iconic cursive HB maker\'s mark (the B is rubbed, but the H is so distinctive there is no doubt whose mark it is). This mark was registered in 1776 by London silversmith Hester Bateman (see page 76 of Grimwade\'s London Goldsmiths 1697-1837). The creamer is 4.5 inches tall, over 4 inches at its widest point, weighs 2.9 ounces, it is beautifully shaped and decorated, makes a wonderful display piece, and it is in very good condition. I believe there have been small repairs under the top handle join and on the left side of the bottom handle join (see the last two pictures). Please view the closeup pictures and judge for yourself (the creamer has not been professionally polished). A very rarely seen quite attractive and fully functional piece of very fancy Georgian silver by the great Hester Bateman. Since the cartouche on its front is not monogrammed it would be easy to personalize this piece either for yourself or as a gift to someone else.
