VINTAGE BARN FIND 1967 MARGAY NEW BREED GO KART McCULLOCH 91B1 QUICK CHANGE:
$1652.99

Well not really a \"barn find\" but a \"garage find\". Purchased from the original owner this kart had been stored away in an old garage here in NJ for nearly 40 years. It is exactly the way it was found except I replaced the worn and cracked tires with NOS Carlisles (Super Slicks in the rear) and added the Kustom Kart Shop moniker , hand painted on the back of the seat pan. Based on info gathered, it is likely the kart was originally purchased at Kustom Kart Shop in Union, NJ which was the area Margay dealer. (If someone didn\'t want the lettering it would wipe right off with some thinner.) I am not a collector of vintage karts so I did a little research and contacted Keith Freber of Margay who was very excited to see the photos and provided some backround info and history for me. He loved the kart ! He said it would be right at home in a museum, un-restored, just the way it sits.I had originally assumed from the 1967 brochure pics that the steering wheel and tank had been swapped out at one time. Keith indicated that the butterfly wheel and floor mounted tank could possibly have come from Margay that way. Basically, if that was the setup you wanted for racing then his dad (or grand-dad) would have obliged the buyer. If they were swapped out, it was done a long time ago. As you can see from the photos it has a wet clutch /quick change box and is powered by a 91B1 McCulloch with Gem intake, Gem exhaust elbow, and expansion pipe header. This thing looks like it was all business back in the day. The original upholstery is very nice I do not see a rip or tear in it anywhere. The aluminum seat pan and floor pan are excellent with no extra holes, cuts, dings or dents..(the black mark on the bottom of the floor pan is just a scuff mark of rubber or paint that I\'m sure would clean off). The front nerf bar is tweaked a little as is the right front axle at the spindle. This appears as though it may have been done purposely to adjust the handling of the kart. The reason I say this is the axle is tweaked slightly forward not backward as it would be if it hit something. The kart wears it\'s original metallic blue paint with just some light tarnishing in spots but overall very nice. Chrome on the fuel tank is tired. Original Margay pedals and wheels. I have never attempted to start it, it has just been hanging from the rafters in my garage in the years that I have owned it. I had planned to get it running and have some fun with it... turn some laps with it at the vintage kart events and at Raceway Park, but now I\'m retiring and moving and need to lighten the load. I would imagine after all these years the engine should be gone through or at least get some new seals and bottom end lube. Brakes will also need to be serviced.
I think you would be hard pressed to find a nicer example of this kart in original condition...in the years I have owned it I have not seen another 1st year Margay \"survivor\" like this. I would leave it as is rather than over restore it as I think karting enthusiasts would love to see this piece of history as is. It would also make a great candidate for restoration.....so I will leave that decision up to the new owner.
