This is a handcrafted basket that was created by a master weaver of the Tohono O\'Odham, formerly Papago tribe of Arizona. It waspurchased at The Heard Museum in the 1970s. The card in the picture is from the Heard Museum will go to the new owner.
Papago baskets are handcrafted of beargrass, yucca (white or green) and devils claw (black). The technique used is known as coiling. Split stitch baskets are made of beargrass and sewn with yucca in such a manner that the coil is exposed to form part of the pattern.
This basket is tightly coiled and is in Mint used condition.
