This is a unique vintage Dunhill Half-Giant Aquarium Lighter circa 1950. Each aquarium lighter was designed and handmade by Ben Shillingford. Shillingford was a master at carving and painting lucite panels. Lucite was originally developed during World War II as an alternative to glass, because it would not shatter when under fire. After the war, lucite was coveted by artists for its versatility. The lucite panels offer a wonderful luster, bringing a beautiful sparkle and dimensionality to the piece when the light hits it.
After Shillingford retired from Dunhill, no other artist was found to possess comparable skills and talents, so the production of Aquarium Lighters ceased.
Since each lighter was handmade, no two lighters are the same!
This lighter depicts a \"Dieu at mon droit\" shield on both front and back while the sides have the letter \"E R\"
The \"Aquarium\" is in outstanding condition, with no chips or scratches.
Marked \"Dunhill Lighter\" on bottom, and partially visible \"Made in England\" on bottom as well.
The top metals show wear commensurate with age, and the bottom has some scratching on the metal commensurate with age and use.
