VINTAGE RARE GEORGE WOODHEAD ANTIQUE POCKET KNIFE SHEFFIELD ENGLAND CIRCA 1849:
$249.00

What\'s the oldest and rarestpocket knife in your collection? Here is ascarceantiqueGEORGE WOODHEAD pocket knife made between 1849to 1870 at36 Howard St. inSheffield England. Probably Pre Civil War(!)This 2 blade knife is in the neighborhood of 169 years old! Its fun to imagine how many different knifecollectors have held this knife. It measures4\" long whenclosed. The handles are made out ofHorn and the blades are Cast Steel. Both blades have tang stamps which are different. The horn handle on the \"bar shield\" sideis rich in color, making for a great display piece! Note in the photos that there is a small chip of hornmissing at the but end of the knife. Snap by both blades is verystrong. When all the way open there is a slight wobble to each blade (common to these knives?) Blades have not been cleaned to conserve original patina. They are however sharp with what looks to be a singlelight touch-up sharpening. The original factory edge seems to beclose to intact. (i.e. never aggressively sharpened)Original bar shield is tight but has been slightly bent. This pocket knife has survived the years well!

Money back guarantee if not satisfied with this knife!

History: George Woodhead (1808-1884) and his partner Joshua Hartley started in 1839 as spring knife manufacturers in Bower Spring. In 1841, the firm of Woodhead and Hartley started producing Bowie knives as well and were located on Lambert Street. In 1849 George Woodhead went out alone and moved to 36 Howard St in Sheffield England. (shown on the tangs of this knife) He employed 20 men at that time and his factory included an office, warehouse, packing room, 6 workshops, a grinding hull and steam power. The workforce expanded to 40 men by 1871 and became George Woodhead and Sons in 1876. In addition to Bowie knives they produced pen, pocket and table knives.
