I bought this drum set
from the original owner a few years ago.
His parents bought it for him for Christmas 1963. This set is in the very rare Mardi Gras
warp. The condition of
the wrap on this set is in excellent, unfaded and in undamaged condition with
tight seams and only a few light scratches.
The chrome is also
beautiful with no pitting and showing only light use. This kit was made in the transitional time
when Rogers was
using both the earlier style bread and butter lugs and the later beaver tail
lugs. The 12 inch mounted tom and the 16
inch floor tom on this set have beaver tail lugs. The 20 inch bass drum and
5X14 inch snare drum have bread and butter lugs. This practice was not uncommon for Rogers in the early 1960’s.
The
bread and butter lugs on the share drum have been replaced by new JP2 Creations
bread and butter lugs (jp2creations@yahoo.com).
It is rare that you find a vintage Rogers
snare drum with undamaged B&B lugs.
JP2 Creations lugs are considered the industry standard for B&B lug
replacements. These lugs are heavily chrome plated and much stronger than the
original Rogers B&B lugs. Minus the replaced
snare lugs this drum kit is all original.
All
of the drums are
excellent inside and out. The drum interiors
have untouched grey painted interiors with Cleveland label in all four drums – the
screws are even untouched. The serial numbers
are: bass drum # 30386, mounted tom, #37432, floor tom #38801 and snare #26292
. The bass drum hoops have been cleaned up and
the silver sparkle hoop decoration was replaced correctly. There is a couple feet of the original silver
sparkle hoop decoration for an example. The
bass drum has a Ludwig rail mount to hold the 12” tom. The tom also has the corresponding Ludwig
mounting bracket to fit on the rail mount.
I questioned the owner about the Ludwig rail. He assured me that the Ludwig rail mount was
original from the drum shop and this is the way the drums have always been
mounted. The interior mounting screws
for these brackets also appear to be untouched and original as do all of the
drums screws. I talked to Bobby Chaisson of Jolity
Drum Farm (durmfarm.com) about this Ludwig rail mount. Bobby is a drum authority and especially knows
and loves Rogers drums. He assured me that rail mounts from other
manufacturers were occasionally used on Rogers Drums – not unheard of! No doubt it was installed at the drum shop as
the original owner had told me.
All in all this is a
wonderful drum kit. I have been playing
it in the studio over the last few years.
It sounds great with a warm but very responsive snare drum, plenty of
punch from the 20 inch bass drum and a nice 12” & 16” tom combo. All of the heads have been recently replaced
and are ready to play. It’s hard to believe that this is nearly a 50
year old drum set. Don’t miss this
opportunity to score a rare classic American set ready to play with class!
