vintage TOA 265-ME poly cone heavy 6½” woofers w/ new foam surrounds—Japan c1980:
$79.95

Offered for your consideration is a pair of TOA model BST-136 6½ inch poly cone woofers removed from their 265-ME Studio Reference Monitor Speakers, made in Japan c.1980. These heavy magnet woofers are also suitable for the 265-ME-AV, as long as magnetic shielding isn’t required, and possibly other vintage TOA models as well. So, please take a look at the large photos, measurements, and read the remaining description to decide if these very capable woofers are suitable for your needs.

These woofers are in clean, excellent condition. They have perfect ribbed polypropylene cones and flawless poly voice coil dustcaps. Plus, the black-enameled steel baskets, gold-anodized magnet covers, and beefy ceramic magnets are in great shape with no scratches, dings, or oxidation noted. These quality-built drivers even have a tiny counterweight affixed to cones’ back to compensate for the minuscule weight of the +/- lead wires entering on the opposing pole to keep everything in perfect balance! And, most importantly, the aged original factory foam surrounds were just replaced.

Most speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the mid 1970’s to 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably rots and falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception—the surrounds had dry rotted and pieces were missing; they were in bad shape. As I’m sure you know, proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time.

Some of you have replaced woofer surrounds before, so you know it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. First, I carefully remove the four-section flange gaskets then cleaned the cones’ edges and basket flanges to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which takes some time to do correctly. Then, I glued the inner surrounds to the cones which is fairly straightforward with most woofers. But not with these since that inner lip goes under the cone which necessitates stretching the surround to fit, with glue already on it, which is very hard to do without making a huge mess on the cone (or perhaps even tearing the surround). Next, I glued the outer surrounds to the basket flanges and verified that there was no voice coil rub. Lastly, I reaffixed the flange gaskets. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between each of the steps to achieve the perfect results you see here. Now these woofers are in great shape once again—perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds!

Naturally, they’ve been fully tested after the new surrounds were installed and sound terrific—very strong and clear output with fast, detailed midrange and solid low-end for the platform size. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a closely-matched 4.9 and 5.0Ω, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the baskets measure just over 6¾” diameter, they stand 3⅛” tall, and the mount holes are spaced 4½” adjacent / 6⅜” diagonal apart, center-to-center.

So, if your cherished TOA 265-ME nearfield monitors are sitting idle because the surrounds have been ‘shot’ for years, you’ve found the right listing—your speakers will be sounding their best again in no time! These stalwart woofers would also make a nice choice in your next speaker-building project! So, as pictured and described, this pair of TOA 6½” woofers with painstakingly restored surrounds is offered at a competitive price.

Terms of Sale:

I encourage interested parties to ask any questions they may have about this listing before committing to purchase. Payment is due at checkout by PayPal.
