Most communications speakers have traditionally been three to five inch drivers mounted either internally or in an external cabinet. Alternatively, a Stereo music speaker adapted for use with voice associated applications is also used. Both of these designs have inherent problems associated with voice reproduction. The three to five inch speaker has a frequency response between 200 Hz-6 KHz; this is where most vocal content is heard. The problem is presence, nuance, subtlety, and detail of voice are lost. This is not solely because of frequency response but the ability of the speaker to produce a large enough sound field that engulfs the listener with the sound.
The stereo music speaker presents another problem. They are generally inefficient due to an elaborate crossover network and present anomalies such as bass boom, hiss, and general noise due to cone thickness , tweeter hiss or bad design. Music speakers add their own compromises to voice transmissions as their design is based on 20-20kHz frequency response and power handling. This is not a concern with voice transmission.
