This sale is for a WILLIAMSBURG* REPRODUCTION SAMPLER KIT BY PARAGON NEEDLECRAFT . . . EXCLUSIVE MAKERS OF WILLIAMSBURG NEEDLEWORK REPRODUCTIONS, titled "THE CHASE" Sampler Kit No. S-142 (01137X). The package states, "Copied from a sampler worked in 1760 by 11-year-old Mary Starker, this reproduction kit accurately duplicates the gay colors and charming design of the original in the Williamsburg collection. The antique sampler is a rare example of American needlework design because it combines not only an embroidered picture with the ususal alphabet lists, but also includes the designer's place of birth. "Newbury, New England," (probably Newburyport, Massachusetts). Mary Starker's name, her place of birth, the date and a pious ejaculation, "Goodness and Mercy Ever follow (t)hose who shape there (sic) Conduct by Gods Holy Laws," have been deleted from this version of the sampler so that each person may stitch her own name into the sampler. The title of this reproduction sampler, "The Chase," is inspired by the embroidered picture at the bottom of the sampler where a dog is depicted chasing a running stag."
THIS KIT CONTAINS: Stamped Sampler on 100% Belgian Linen size 28" x 20", Peri-Lusta embroidery thread and complete easy-to-follow instructions.
