World War I Trench Art Shell Casings Vases Reims Verdun:
$154

Pair of World War One

Trench Art Vases

Reims - Verdun

There is a genuine elegance to this pair of trench art vases that you do not often encounter with this primitive art form, so we are very proud to make them available to a lucky collector through this sale. As the photos show, this is a pair of vases formed out of the raw material of spent shell casings! Each vase measures 13 1/2" tall. The metal is brass or a brass alloy.

The Reims Vase commemorates the Battle of Reims waged from July 15th to August 5 1918. This vase displays that name on a plague that is suspended from a ribbon tied into a bow. This motif has a garland of leaves with buds at the end that rise up on either side of the plaque and ribbon. The back of the vase is decorated with a plinth that has a column rising from it on top of which is a rooster.

The Verdun Vase commemorates the Battle ofVerdun one of the most significant battle of the war. This vase shows an arched and pedimented doorway of a manor? a castle? with gabled walls under the plaque that reads Verdun. The rear of this vase shows a rooster standing on a ball with a cattail alongside all under a resplendent sun.

All of this decoration is inscribed in the metal creating a releif. It is perhaps the base of these vases that really gives them their elegance. The bases are fluted! They are lovely, beautifully formed, artfully rendered, lovingly produced; probably sent home as a gift to a sweetheart, their charm resounds!
