Wonderful collection of 47 photographs of battle scared towns throughout Belgium. Many are “Before and After” photographs of the same scenes taken before and after the destruction of battle.Battle scenes are from the Belgium towns of YPRES, YSER RIVER, WESTENDE, DIXMUDE, and ZEEBRUGGE. There are also views of the steel and trench works of the Germans and five views of soldier graves.“Before and After” views of YPRES include, St. Martin’s Cathedral, “Belle-Hospice”, Post Office, and Guildhall (8). Also panorama scenes of YRES in 1914 and again in 1917 (4).
Ruins in WESTENDE (4). “The murderous River YSER” (4). “All what rests of DIXMUDE” (4). British Naval attack on ZEEBRUGGE (8). “Steel and concrete defense works and tench of the Germans” (4). “Soldier Graves” (5). “German heavy artillery left behind in Belgium” (5). The big gun is \"Lange Max\" (german name: Batterie Pommern) from Koekelare (Belgium).
All these images came from an early 1920 photographic album that unfortunately was falling apart and could not be saved. There is one photograph of the three people who made this automobile trip through war-torn Belgium shortly after the end of Word War l.Of the 47 photographs, 35 are Albertype images and the remaining 12 are gelatin silver prints made by the people who took this trip. They range in size from 5 x 7 to 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 (postcard size). A few are a bit smaller (see scans). They are all in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and are very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity.
