WW1 1903 pattern Haversack 162nd Infantry L Company: $50.00
These haversacks are very similar to the Spanish American and Indian War model haversack but are greatly improved. The Size of the haversack was increased and the D rings replaced with spring clips to hook to the new 1903 cartridge belt. These packs were outdated by WW1 but some still managed to make it into service; I believe they were issued to the rear troops and guard units. This pack measures about 14 1/4 inches wide and 14 inches long, when folded in half. There is a one large inner pouch with two inner side pockets and one pocket on the flap broken into three sections, one large pocket flanked by two small pockets. The pocket on the flap has rawhide tie strings. On the inside of the flap it is stamped, \"Rock Island Arsenal 1904.\" The front of the flap is is marked, \"28,\" \"L,\" \"162,\" \"U.S.\" So that would be 162nd Infantry, Company L, Soldier 28. I looked over the back and didn\'t see any holes. There are some small stains here and there and some minor discoloration, looks like water marks. There is some rust on the metal hardware but nothing a wire brush can\'t clean. The Spring clips and the buckle work fine. Would make a good addition to a collection for WW1, haversack development, living histories, or displays.
