WW1 German Zeppelin Internal Gas Bladder Skin Relic - ZEPPELIN L33 - VERY RARE:
$600

You are offerding on anVERYRAREexample of a 100% ORIGINAL WW1 German Zeppelin Fabric Skin, as recovered from L33! This airship was shot downover England, on September 23, 1916.

A Zeppelin was a type of rigid airship named after the German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (German pronunciation, who pioneered rigid airship development at the beginning of the 20th century. Zeppelin's notions were first formulated in 1874 and developed in detail in 1893. They were patented in Germany in 1895 and in the United States in 1899. After the outstanding success of the Zeppelin design, the word zeppelin came to be commonly used to refer to all rigid airships. Zeppelins were first flown commercially in 1910 by Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-AG (DELAG), the world's first airline in revenue service. By mid-1914, DELAG had carried over 10,000 fare-paying passengers on over 1,500 flights. During World War I the German military made extensive use of Zeppelins as bombers and scouts, killing over 500 people in bombing raids in Britain.[4.]

On afternoon hours of September 23rd 1916, one of the ‘next generation’ super-Zeppelins, L33, took to the air for its first operational mission: the bombing of downtown London. Just a few months before, L33 was on the ground, getting its final fittings and adjustments. The L33 was truly a remarkable piece of engineering. She was 649′ long, with a 78 feet diameter and with a total gas capacity of 1,949,000 cubic feet. Six powerful Maybach 240hp Hslu engines gave the lumbering giant a top speed of 59 mph at a maximum operational ceiling of 13,500 feet. Beside its sheer size, what separated the L33 from its predecessor was its bomb load capacity. An impressive five tons of ordnance could be stored.

Taking part in the London raid was L31 under the command of Heinrich Mathy, L32, lead by the enigmatic Werner Peterson and the L33, controlled by Alois Bocker.

The Commander of L33, arrived over London's East End, dropping devastating bombs onto Bromley-by-Bow, Bow and Stratford. These fired a lumber yard, oil depository, then demolished a row of houses, killing six people, injuring another twelve. The "Black Swan" public house was destroyed, killing four of its unsuspecting patrons.

Its mission accomplished, and turning back, a defensive shell fired from the British defence guns at Bromley, Kent, exploded inside the L33, with fatal consequences.

L33's crew dropped much of the water ballast, (reported by ground spotters as a "smoke screen") then drifted East, losing 800 feet of altitude each minute.

Despite the shell burst squarely inside one of the hydrogen cells, for some inexplicable reason, the gas did not catch fire, but merely escaped allowing the damaged L33 to land intact in Knapp's Field and Five Acre Glebe Field, near New Hall Farm cottages and Peldon / Little Wigborough Church), north of Mersea Island, Essex.

Made of fabric/paper,this Interior Bladder Skin isinSUPERB relic condition! Recovered from the wrecksite in 1916, however I do not have any further history (was acquired from a collector in Sussex in 1965). Somemarks andscratches due to the age, but VERY solid with no major damage. It has hardeded over time, but still quite solid. Though it is currently folded in the sale photos, unfolded, it measures approx. 10" x 32". I have shown an actual image of the L33 wrecksite in the last image. Many fabric pieces were scavanged after the crash, and now only survive in museums. Would make a PERFECT addition to any collection or display!
