Xpeg 1500 Race Motor MG TF TD Laystall Engine +Parts:
$6999.00

last time and price drop:)
While uncrating the engine for additional photos I realized there were a number of additional parts packaged up around the oil pan. There are two old heads, one TD and one TF. Bob left notes on both suggesting one was modified while the othe milled. A new clutch and what looks like a chromed redone lucas starter and some other old bits. Please email for additional pictures as I can only put 12 on the listing.
I swapped out some of the photos to show the polished oil pan and other parts. Additionally, I have a bunch more photos now that I\'ve got the box open on three sides, so if you need to see more just shoot me a note.
From the last listing I got a bunch of great input from a number of helpful ers/MG enthusiasts. A couple suggested that the engine would not really compete with the parts used, that it would be fast for a TD, but not a full race engine without things like a roller cam instead of the Crane cam. I also do not know the specifics on the crankshaft. I\'m not trying to pass the motor off as anything it isn\'t, but it was built as the motor built for my dad to get involved in vintage racing in his old TD...
Original listing
I have for sale a motor that my father had built in hopes in getting involved in vintage car racing with his MGTD. Unfortunately, he passed away prior to getting the car on the road. I had a shop in California finish the restoration of the car which I now have and love, but years later I got a call that there was an additional motor being built for the car, and that it need to be paid for and picked up due to health issues of the builder. I was under the impression at the time, that this motor was the original motor to the car, but after it arrived it became clear it was not. The builder made it clear that this motor was going to be much faster than the engine currently in the car, so it was a must have. After holding on to the motor for a bit, I\'ve realized that I\'ll probably not be building a race car anytime soon, and that the motor should be passed on and used instead of sitting in a box for years and years.
The XPEG motor was built by a gentleman named Bob Hohstadt in Pacific Grove, California. I believe my father had met him through the Monterey area MG club. I never met Bob, only had a couple of nice phone calls, but he seemed a super cool guy. Some paperwork came in a folder from Robert Meyer Racing. An online search suggests that they had good success with corvettes in the 80\'s as Hohstadt Meyer Racing. As mentioned before, Mr. Hohstadt was working on this motor for a number of years due to health issues, but when I spoke to him at the end of last year he had just completed the motor and throughly bench tested the motor.
I did a lot of reasearch trying to confirm if the engine was original to my car. The guys on the MG Experience website were a ton of help with information about the builder and this engine type. I honestly don\'t know the value of the motor, but I know from receipts what my father paid for work and parts, and I know the size of the check I had to write to get it shipped out to me once completed last year. I know I shouldn\'t expect to get all that money back, but Xpeg engines are not super common these days, and I suspect race prepped Xpeg\'s by reputable builders are \"Rare as hen\'s teeth\" as they say.

For the technical folks.... Some of the notes between the machine shop and Bob suggest compression needing to be 10:1. The race cam being being made from billet from Crane. Doing a \"job\" to improve the lifters. Lightening the flywheel. Welding the face of the rocker tips so Bob could get a good tip profile. They also suggest that between them that with the cam as it was would require ported head, tuned exhaust header and modified twin carbs. RPM range 3500-6500. It also mentions \"No TQ in the 1000-2500 RPM range\". Please ask questions you might have but realize I do not have much information other than what I was told by Bob and the file full of receipts and notes.

The last time I spoke to Bob, he said he had bench run the engine, but made no mention that it had been tested for HP. There is a file folder full of receiptsdating back to \'05 from Moss and different machine shops in the MontereyBay area. Mr. Hohstadt started building the two engines at the same time, then completed one for install in the car. This second motor was obviously finished years later when his health returned but just before he passed.
The motor was professionallycrated and shipped to me last year, and I have only taken the top off the box for inspection. The motor will be shipped in this same box. I\'m willing to deliver the engine anywhere from as far south as CT or north as Maine, as long it fits my schedule and the motor is paid in full. Anything outside of that, I can drop off at a shipper to be put on a pallet and forwarded at the buyers expense. This motor was shipped to me on a crate from California for around $400 if I remember correctly.
Please ask for any additionalphotos you might need or information I might be able to supply from the folder of receipts. I would love to think that someday I could\'ve put this motor to use racing around Lime Rock or Laguna Seca, but it\'s just not in the cards.
I will provide copies of receipts and a bill of sale with the engine.
