Great radar detector. It is very sensitive. Voice alerts are nice, since they tell you what band of radar it is detecting. It has warned me of oncoming speed traps on the highway, before I could actually see the patrol car. The only negative is that even at full volume, it is not very loud. If you drive on the highway with your radio turned up, you might not hear the alerts. If a cop is using the instant-on radar gun, by the time you hear the alarm, it may be too late. I did have that happen and immediately slowed down, so it still may have saved me from getting a ticket. I don't know of any detector that can detect an instant on radar though. This is the only radar detector I have owned, so I can not compare it to others.
I've used a lot of radar detectors over the past 30 years, and I've had very, very few speeding tickets. All these detectors seemed to work, they all picked up police radar fine ...but they also picked up lots of OTHER radar based devices too! Since these ARE radar based signals, they aren't really false alarms but they ARE aggravating alarms. I'd say that is the biggest difference in detectors, some know the difference and don't pester you till they encounter a VALID concern. The false alerts on most detectors will destroy any confidence you have in them. I actually beat one detector to death for harassing me with needless alerts. I find that the detection range is fairly similar on most detectors, it is apparently pretty easy to pick up radar signals, door openers, sonograms, UHF radio transmitters and satellite transmitters. Its those needless alerts from NON-POLICE radar devices that makes most detectors useless and/or aggravating. Lucky for us, some detectors do a good job of sorting out the signals they receive. These detectors often cost more but they ARE worth it ...because you can trust their opinion when you get an alert. Enter Passport, Sentry, Cisco-tech,Valentine One and others. High-end radar detectors are often priced from $350 to $1700 or more. As an electronics rep I've been able to road test many of these premium models without investing my own money. In my experience these high-end units all do a great job. But wait! There is at least one detector that I found that works as well but FOR A LOT LESS MONEY. The Cobra XRS-9445 street retail price is only $99 but I found a few on eBay for under $50! There are many sellers on eBay so shop around. The Cobra XRS-9445 does a great job and you can trust it's judgment. The features are endless so read the manufacturer's specs. It can pick up police radar equipment in every current band allowed to be used by the FCC. False alerts are minimal and with the voice descriptive alert you don't have to watch the display to see what the detector picked up. This detector is the first one I've used that performed like the high-end units so I bought two for my on use. I haven't regretted it, even my easily aggravated wife uses it now. The installation is super easy and the instruction book is clear and complete. I love the performance, the small size, and the portability when I use a rent car. I do wish it came with a separate straight power cord for permanent use on my personal car so I could hide the wire along the windshield. I also wish it had a mount that allowed me to rotate the detector straight ahead but with a 45 degree horizontal rotation. (That further reduces the non-police radar based signals.) Hope this info helps someone save some money. There are more expensive Cobra detectors that I haven't tried so if I ever decide to upgrade I'll certainly check the Cobras first.Read full review
The Cobra XRS-9445 Radar detector is great for someone on a budget that wants quality and performance. This detector works well on the highway and city. I tend to use the highway mode more often though since this setting is more sensitive to radar and laser. But overall I read many positive reviews about this detector and had to buy it knowing that even though Cobra may not be the top of the line for radar detectors. They have came very far since their older models.
Well made, easy to set up and use. I always take it off when I park and the bracket/clip design is slick that makes it really easy to get it on and off. An overall high quality product for its price. Nice (cool) looking too.
I bought this product cause it offered everything I am looking for at a very good price. So far it is great havent used it much but will definitely put it to good use on a long road trip I am taking soon. I would only buy Cobra products; nothing beats a Cobra. :)
