Any of the JVC HR-9xxx series VCR with the built in time base corrector, if functioning properly produces a higher quality picture than any other VHS VCR ever built including fully professional models made by JVC and Panasonic. They also produce a better picture than a VHS player hooked to an external time base corrector. The caveat is that the machine must be in good working order. So many of these have been used to death at this point and with their unique circuitry when not functioning properly, will create glitches that wouldn't happen in other less sophisticated machines. If you're converting old VHS tapes to digital and you want to get the best picture quality that is possible from those tapes, then these machines working well do the very best job hands down. We've done split screen side by side samples comparing these to others and the difference is remarkable. Film Rescue InternationalRead full review

Initially it wasn’t showing a picture when a tape was inserted. I Imagine the tape heads were very dirty. Upon cleaning them x2 eventually I saw an image. But due I guess from not being used for years the tape stalled & didn’t thread properly. After all this maintenance it finally played but cut off several times. My openion is this player was a - & not a plus for my use for it.
