Works very well at the highest audio resolution setting. Picks up audio range very well. Not an audiophile level device, has that solid state harshness to it, not bad, but detectable during playback. Stereo imaging is very good. For a small portable recording device, it performs very well. Small size makes it easy to carry and use. Would recommend a small holding device because it will pickup movement without the low cut filter on, but using the filter reduce the low frequency sensitivity. Did not use the blue tooth capability to confirm other reports on reducing battery life. Over all to date, quite pleased with this recorders performance.

Automatic modes always distorted, manual modes sound good but left channel always lower than right with no way to balance, gain knob is awkward and feels stiff and fragile, all settings lost with battery change including time and date, battery life is under an hour when using wi-fi, cannot monitor recording in real time on wi-fi, speaker is so weak and distorted I couldn't hear it clearly even when holding the unit next to my ear, impossible to hand hold without introducing noise. I sent it back and replaced it with an Olympus LS-12 which doesn't have wi-fi but the build quality and functions are superior in every way to the DR-22wl.

I love my Tascam DR22WL.It seemed complicated at first ,but it is fairly easy when you read the directions, even though the directions are a bit unclear on certain functions, the basics are pretty clear. The sound is excellent,I don't hear any background hiss,as I have in another Tascam recorder I have. What I really like is the easy overdub feature, you can layer all you want and it's still clear as a bell.Granted,I;m still learning all of it's capabilities, but the basics work great.I still haven't used the WIFI feature, but that's not a big deal for me.If someone wants a professional recorder for a small price,THIS IS IT! I sing in a large church choir. I record our practices then practice on my own using my recordings I made on the Tascam-22WL. The sound quality is amazing. With the app I can place the unit centrally then use my phone to control it. So cool.

The Tascam DR22 is good for voice recording with or without a mic. As for recording music, its not recommended. There is background noise, sort of hissing sound you get on old cassette tapes and its impossible to get rid of. I hooked my keyboard up to the line in and my DSLR camera to the line out to video record professional sounding music and was not impressed. At fist it was distorted, so I played with the gain on either side in and out as it permits and still couldn't get good stereo sound quality. At over $200 I expected way better. If you want to do something similar as I've described here, I would recommend a Steinberg audio interface which comes with Cubase AI as standard and allows you to get pro grade stereo sound to your camera without the hassles of fidgeting with gain and levels. If all you want to do is have somewhere to plug a mic in to record interviews, then the Tascam is ideal, but the price is still too high for just that purpose. You can find an equally capable audio recorder for a fraction.Read full review
