I've used Tech21 products for decades as backup for my amps. I was interested in this as a grab and go solution for jams with or without an amp. I haven't needed it yet, but the size and the capability are great. If it had some kind of tremolo or chorus built in, it would be perfect. As to the RK5 vs the original FR5, I like the drives and tone of this version better, both direct and into an amp.

I'll agree with most reviews, very usable and pro sounding. I picked the RK5 over the FR5 in a side by side play in series with a tele into a Deluxe Reverb. Then I found a used RK5 on eBay. The boost, reverb and delay effects are excellent and seem exactly the same in either unit. However the SansAmp and OMG Overdrive in the RK5 just instantly suited me better than the seemingly less forthright and somewhat anemic SA & Plexi sections in the FR5. Perhaps on its own the FR5 has its strengths, and maybe I just didn't give it a chance, but the RK5 is simply easier to dial in unity gain or more & just rips right out of the box, and I'm not a super heavy player. I do roots, rock, country, pop, acoustic, blues, R&B, you know, VARIETY. The biggest mistake Tech 21 made was not separating out the killer reverb as a standalone, switchable effect, really really REALLY dumb because you may or may not want to use the SansAmp depending on whatever you're plugging into. And you may or may not want to use the Reverb depending what you're plugging in to, or even switch it in the middle of the song. Incidentally, this thing sounds great direct into a full-range system by the way. Conversely though, if you like whatever amp you might be using, forget the SansAmp or use it as an alternate tone, but please why can't I switch the reverb on/off independently of that!? I HATE that about this unit. Secondly I can't put a volume pedal in the middle of this thing between the gain sections and reverb delay, that also kinda sucks. I'm stuck with using a volume after the whole thing, not really optimal for the way I roll. Lastly, they really should have made the effort to run this badboy on 9 volts. Not a game killer though. And for how small this little wonder is, I mean wait til you actually pick one up, all complaints become less important. Ultimately, it sounds great and is so small, light and convenient, I hope they make other models with improvements. I feel sorry for people that have said the switches are too close and want it bigger. What, you're missing the point, then go get something else. I have small feet and a love for portability. Try one, I think most gigging players of all persuasions would find a great use for either of these units.Read full review

I recently purchased a Tech 21 RK5 to use on my live solo and duo shows. I also used it last Saturday on a band gig. It sounds incredible. On my solo and duo shows I usually run my rig direct through the P.A. It sounds really close to real tubes. The OD section sounds great as well. I also like the ability to set delay tempo with the tap tempo footswitch. I am running it with a wah and NS2 noise gate in front and a Line 6 Roto Machine after. Sounds like a million bucks. On a band gig you can run it direct or turn off the Sans Amp and run it into the front of an amp. My Pod HD500 has become a backup rig for my solo and duo shows. I highly recommend this product. I love this fly rig ! Great tones! Big band for the bucks. The new version of this rig has a built in tuner and cord output. Wish I would have bought it but I’m still highly satisfied with this one!

Appropriately about the size of a stick of dynamite. It only lacks a fuse. Great product. If I were going to make improvements, I would offer the same phantom power for a wah pedal, (as Kotzen's own rig does), and add a signal splitter and a tuner. But I'm not complaining. I'm very happy with this pedal board.
