The button on the side that keeps the planer running once you take your finger off the trigger is a safety hazard. The planer had to be modified so that the depth of cut could be a little deeper than the factory spec (for my needs to plane walking staffs.) The blades are easy to get to if you need to replace them. I have had two other hand power planers and this one makes a really smoother cut , runs faster through the wood . This one has a handy thermal switch for when you overheat it. (blowing dust out of the vents with compressed air occasionally will keep it from overheating). after a couple minutes of cooling it comes right back on. Makita equipment is very well made. To be honest I planed enough staves to make the chips 9 inches deep all around me before it overheated. I love it.Read full review

I'm not sure how old it is-but when I first tested it, it didn't cut evenly and I'm not sure the blades are very sharp. I'm not very pleased with this.
