Ben Hogan Personal Irons – 1958 – Refinished and ready to play
Here’s one of those fantasy sets. The Hogan Personals are the font of most of the
good designs that came later. You will notice that the famous Mizuno MP 14 and
29 models are very close copies of the personal. (The Japanese were not known
or original designs back then.) Since then, the Hogan Personal has become the
second most copied iron model of all time – after the Ping Eye2.
So, you’re playing the original model.
It is completely refinished. That’s the reason I’m selling them. Refinishing
destroys any collector value. I’ll tell you all my complaints in one bunch. The guy
who did the job was not meticulous in the rebuild. I’m referring to the fact that
he left the pin hole open so you can see too easily that these are refinished heads.
If that were a real good job, it’s not too hard to find the shaft orientation where
the pins were lined up and tap a little rivet into place. That makes them look just
like the original. If you wanted to finish them that way, you could drill through
the shaft just as it is and add the rivet yourself. That would be good practice.
Or, just play them as they are.
The shafts are standard Hogan. We have not put grips on yet so the buyer can
have his choice of Tour Velvet or Crossline – regular or Midsize. That’s our little
way of customizing .
I’ve seen these sell for upwards of $1000 years ago – before they all disappeared
and everyone forgot them.
I’m running up against an listing limit so let’s start these at $99 which breaks
