best diy setup for tomatos

hi all
starting out with hydroponics.
am planning to grow some tomatos, and i wonder which is the ideal setup to grow them. is it a basic planter (like the one in Roberto's book) good enough, or should i go with a complex system. i am in a tight budget, btw
