Nutrient Film Technique is a system that circulate a shallow stream of nutrient solution over roots being grown in a trough. The trough is made of plastic and is covered to prevent algae from growing in the nutrient solution. The trough has a slight downward slope to a reservoir. The solution is pumped back up to the top of the trough and circulates down through the plant roots back to the reservoir. Since there is no or not much medium to hold nutrient solution, the flow must be constant.
