how often do we change are water mix?

how often do we change are water mix? does it have to be covered or can i just sit my unit on top? i have a bet with my women that mine will be better then hers that are in the ground. i better win the bet was heavy, house work for a year.

every couple weeks or sooner if your plant show signs of problems. And yes keep the water solution from the light source to cut down on algae.
