why the cups inside of the 2-liters?

Great site, thanks! But why do so many systems have little cups inside of the 2-liters? I didn't see anything about that in your plans. Thanks!

To hold the medium so it won't go down the pipes and to make the plants removable or just to be able to lift the plant up to see what the roots are doing.
