Default Japanese maple tree

HI! i am new to the whole hydroponics thing, but i was wondering if i could take Japanese maple trees and a dwc cloner and get cuttings... if i did since they are a tree and not a fruiting plant i wouldn't need to worry about high potassium or phosphorus nutrients right? i have heard that if your doing lettuces is the same idea as a tree... is this information correct? PLEASE HELP, thank you!
