Default S configuration beds - how much nutriet do the lower plants get?

Some hydroponic setups are tiered - one on top, one in the middle and one on the bottom. Others are arranged in an S shape or look like the letter E. All have one thing in common. The nutrient solution enters at one place and enters in another, after circulating to feed all of the root systems. Is it possible for the plants near the end to be starved of nutrients? How do you avoid this?
