My Super Dooper Spinach Grower
Here is my indoor year round spinach grower. It is a 5 gallon water bottle with the top 1/3 of the bottle cut off, inverted and filled with hydroton. I have it as a drip system on a timer with a small fountian pump but you could also use an air pump instead. I still have to cover the nutes to keep the sun from them and the bad stuff from growing, but the plants are loving it so far. I built one like this for fair and it still has the flowers in it. You can see how they are still thriving. I will be pulling them out and putting in some loose leaf green lettuce very soon.
I got this idea off of youtube and of course made a few changes in my style. I have a "how to" on my website if anyone wants an easy project. I will soon be enjoying some fresh, clean spinach! |

That's a nice simple design. We don't get any of those water bottles, but if I run across one I'll grab it. I think my mom would even like a couple of those on the patio. Your spinach is looking good. I tried to start growing spinach, but never got the seeds to sprout.

I too have struggled with getting spinach to sprout but I came across a post on pinterest that has worked for me. Put your seeds in a zip lock bag with about two inches of water and throw it in the refrigerator. Leave in there for 24 hours then plant. I used the rapid rooters, wrapped the whole thing in cling wrap and put it on my a/c vent. Four days later I walked by it and had about an inch long sprouts.
You can get free bottles from a water company just by asking. They will give away bottles that have leaks and usually mark the leak with a sharpie. Just make sure the leak is in the top 1/3 of the bottle and it will work. The bottles without a handle work the best. I painted the one for fair black then white but I think I am going to mod podge the second one with some craft paper. |

Yes I have ran a couple of plantings thru it. Grows fast and tastes great! Does tend to bolt if they get overfed though.
