General Campaign Medal (Die Kriegsmedaille), 1873 - Large circular bronze medal with laterally-pierced loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the laurel-crowned head of Emperor Franz Joseph I facing right circumscribed ‘FRANZ JOSEPH I . KAISER V. ÖSTERREICH. KÖNIG V. BÖHMEN ETC. APOST. KÖNIG V.UNGARN.’ (Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia etc. Apostolic King of Hungary); the reverse dated ‘2. DECEMBER 1873’ within a wreath of oak and laurel; a few age oxidisation spots; on replaced correct trifold ribbon. The medal was instituted in 1873 and served until World War I to recognise participation in campaigns conducted by the Austro-Hungarian military. Thus, whilst other nations awarded campaign-specific medals, for instance for the China campaign of 1900, Austria- Hungary awarded this medal.
