NO RESERVE PRICE: Vanderman Railroad Bullion Strong Box:
$1600.00

This is a strong box commonly used for the transport of gold bullion or other valuables during a period shortly after the end of the Civil War. Such cargo would commonly be transported by railroad or horse-drawn coach. The materials used in this strong box are formed steel panels, cast iron handles and hardware, welded rivets, and hardwood. The upper outside corners are made of cast iron which are designed to align multiple strong boxes using a rod that goes through the corner castings.
The photographs show:(1) A closeup of the metal tag located on the lower steel panel on the front of the chest. The tag shows the name and location of the manufacturer (Vanderman Mfg. Co in Willimantic, Conn.) and the patent date (July 13, 1897) ;
(2) An overall view of the front and one end of the strong box which shows the riveted steel panels which enclose and strengthen the chest, the attached handle and the built-in hasp (the opposite end is identical)
(3) An overall view showing the top and end of the strong box, and
(4) a view of the open strong box containing a holder of file folders (not part of the original strong box and not included but readily available at a stationary supply store). The light circular areas on the inside of the box appear to be the result of sanding the surface in preparation for painting by a previous owner.
The outside dimensions of the box are 26\" long by 15\" deep by 15\" high and it has an estimated weight of 60 lbs.
This item is a great addition to any collection of railroad memorabilia and post Civil War hardware. It also has several potential applications such as a coffee table, or the secure storage of personal documents or firearms.
Any questions are welcome by the seller.
