*Mummert-Dixon*~#425~ Sharpening Grinder Arbor *Low Speed* Chisel Tool Sharpener:
$75.00

In this sale,is the mainmechanismfrom aMummert-Dixon(model- 425)OilstoneGrinder~ * ~
This is theheartofthese machines. This is what doesall the work.
Other than this mechanism, these machines consist of:The Base,a Sharpening Jig/ Table, andaSharpening Oilrecirculating system.
The Arbor for sale hereis100% functional.
This weighs: 40 lb\'sThe approximate size is:14 -1/4\" x 11 -5/8\" x 6\"
Tip to tip, the side to sidegrinding wheel arbormeasures: 13\"
A drive motor connects to therear shaft; via a flexible coupling. The original motor was:1/4 hp, 1740 rpm
That motor drove thesmall forward shaftat 1725 rpm.An Emery grinding conewould be mounted on the forwardshaft (5/8\" 12 tpi RH).The Emery grinding cone, wouldbe used to sharpenPatternmaker\'s gouges.
The 2 grinding wheels werealso powered by this motor,through a WormReduction gear.At a 3 to 1 reduction,the side wheelswould runat approx.600 rpm.
That\'s what the mechanismincluded in this sale does;all that wheel turning, andreducing. And it does it great!!
The aforementioned motor,is not included here, butis a pretty common item.As you can see in the photos, the bronze worm wheel haslarge nicely cut teeth, and they show little wear.I could see part of the Worm, below it (but couldn\'t photo it). That gear also looks good.
The worm gear isSplash lubricated. Some of that oil likely getsto the other four shafts, for lubrication, as well.
I\'ve had this item stored inthe shop for a few years. It needs a coat of paint, and a lube oil refresh,andit\'s ready to work.It turns very easily, and smoothly by hand.
The side (grinding wheel) arborshave: 3/4\" 10 tpi thread.I found a real nice nut in the shop, for the right (RH) side.
I couldn\'t find anything forwith Left Hand (LH) thread;for the left side.I think it\'s likely thatnuts in that sizecould be found,on . Orthe wheel could beheld in place, with aspring washer& lock collar.
I\'d gotten two of these machines, forparts, a while back.I restored one for myself, and had this, anda base, left over.
I added photos, of mymodel #425.(Ofcourse the restored machineis not included in this listing.)
As I understand it, in the originalmachines they usedKerosene, as the lubricant.
Any thoughts, or ideas, about thatplease let me know. I\'d reallyappreciate any info, andwill add itto the listing.
I did have an member informme that he uses\'Odorless\'Kerosene withhisMummert-Dixon machine.
He said it works great, andthere\'s not objectionable odor.I guess that\'s the answer. Thanks!!
You\'ll find the manualfora larger version of this machine ontheVintage machinery site. All of these machines seemvery similar in their function, and design, from what I can see.
. Also, there are currentlytwo other, probably later, versions of this machinecurrently for sale on ;to check out.~ ~ ~
I found the flexible coupling.A very high quality one, whichconnects a 1/2\" shaft(the drive motor), to a5/8\" shaft (the work arbor). That coupling will be included,in the shipment, with this arbor. That will makepowering this arbor up very simple.~ * ~
( I added a diagram of theoil recirculating system.Let me know, if it\'s not clear. The original \'guards\' arecast pieces, with a hollowpassage, which drainsthe oil \'swept\' off bythe \'wiper\' to a drain tube. This tube, leads the oil toa reservoir tank, from whenceit makes it\'s way backto the oil bath. The \'guard\' hangsfromthe Upper drain tubes; whichare cast as anintegral partof the guard. This allows forin and out, up and down (swing)adjustment. These tubes are about3/4\" round, hollow, and are insertedinto the side of the reservoir.I don\'t have extra guards.)
I don\'t currently have the leather wiperson the complete grinder;which I\'veshown for illustration.~ * ~
As always, all of my items areavailable for local Pick-Up,or inspection at my shopinProvidence, RI.
Only what\'s shown in thephotos is included in this sale.
If you have any questions, orneed more photos, just ask.
Thanks!!
