Mexico City officially startedmaking milled coinage in 1732. From 1732through 1771 the coins were called Pillar Dollars, recognized on one side,which I will call the obverse (front) by 2 Pillars with 2 globes in betweenthem. From 1772 onward Portrait 8 Realeswere minted.
Forthe year 1786 there was one type of 8 Reales issued by the Mexico City Mint.
Forthe Portrait 8 Reales the practice at the mint was to identify the assayers byplacing the senior assayer’s initial first and the junior assayer’s initial secondwhen going around the coin clockwise using the initial of what we call “thefirst name” in the United States of America.
In1786 the assayers were Francisco Arance Cobos (1777 into 1803) and Mariano Rodriguez(1784 into 1801). The initials FM referto these 2 assayers.
MexicoCity 8 Reales from 1785 through the first issue in 1789 (Carolus III) were89.6% pure silver. The second 8 Realesissued in 1789 (Carolus IV), and both issues in 1790 (Carolus IV and CarolusIIII) resumed using the silver purity level of 90.3% used from 1772 through1784. The 89.6% purity level was againused from 1791 through the armored bust series concluding in 1811 under FerdinandVII.
Thephysical appearance of a coin will differ depending on the type and intensityof the light under which we view the coin.I use a 100 watt incandescent light bulb at a distance of about 1 foot.

My shipment to you: The 8thlargestcity in theUSAno longer has a Post Office open after 5:00PM Monday throughFriday. My mail route is “a training route” so I no longer have any idea who isgoing to be delivering my mail, or at what time of day. I am not going toleave a $50-$500 coin outside to be picked up by “whomever”. Given all ofthis, if you win and pay for a coin this morning, it probably won’t be put inthe mail this afternoon. They are taken to the Post Office to be mailed.
Returns: This is a collector coin and not justsome chunk of silver bullion. If you do not feel that this coin is “rightfor you” after you have examined it, send an email letting me know it is comingback to me. Return shipping cost is at the buyer’s expense. Returnit at your convenience, preferably within 14 days. The shipping to you is at myexpense for domestic shipping.
Thisis an old collector’s coin, and you and I both know, as coin collectors,sometimes a coin that looks good from photos does not measure up to ourexpectations. After you have looked at it, if you decide that it is “notfor you”, you don’t have to list a bunch of reasons why you have decided you donot want it. Just let me know that you will be sending it back so that Iwill know to expect it. I have other old 8 Reales.
