Victorian era body removal basket used to transport bodies to the undertaker.
These were the predecessor to the modern body bag. They May also been used for displaying body duringFuneralsand at homesduring, known as...\"The Laying out of the Dead\"
Visitation was usually held in the Front Parlor followed by theprocession to the Church or Cemetery, followed by a committal service at grave-side.
Back in the very early 1900s or even the late 1800s, Jasper County was very rural. People lived all over our county and usually were connected to some community or a church in their particular area.

Most were farmers and Monticello was a long way off since the horse and buggy was the only means of transportation, a trip to town and some of the conveniences there, took a long time. Families were rather large and most of their offspring stayed close to home. There were no funeral homes and very few trained undertakers and no embalming so time was of the essence. Country stores carried caskets as part of their regular stock.
When a member of the family died, the ritual was quite common to the area. The family, or usually neighbors, came by to prepare or clean and dress the body for burial. There were no undertakers so the body was laid out on a “cooling board.”
This was used to lay the body on for the funeral preparations.

After the body of the deceased was prepared and dressed properly it was then placed in a coffin or wicker . The coffin was either hurriedly made locally or purchased from a local country store. The coffin was then placed in the parlor for the “wake” which was usually that night. Family sat with the body all night as neighbors came by to show their respect.

The next day the funeral was held at the house or sometimes at the community church if it was not too far away. The local pastor conducted the service. The burial was in a family cemetery across from the house or in the church cemetery not far away. All the neighbors in the community usually attended. The local church cemeteries grew quite large over the years.
