Butter dishes were a popular itemin the Victorian household. Patterns on butter were popular and round pounds ofbutter were made with patterns on the top. When served, the pattern lent anextra elegance to the table.This lovely piece wasmanufactured by The Wallingford, Connecticut firm of Simpson, Hall, Miller& Company. This hallmark was used in the 1870’s. An exquisite piece measuring5.50 inches high, 6 inches in diameter at the top and 4 inches between theornately decorated, scrolled feet. The high domed cover is decorated with astriking floral, leaf and geometric design and topped with a graceful swanfinial. An insert is included on the inside that has a pierced design. There iswear on the base of the dish that looks like a polishing mark as shown in the picturesand the insert has utensil marks. There are no dents or repairs.
