Offered here is an 1890s scrapbook of newspaper clippings, many literary in nature -- poems and the like --but some relative fewinvolving news items.

The news items aremostly fromBradford County, Pa.,including a death noticefor a Civil War veteran from Wyalusing, a story aboutthe death of a hotel proprietor from Towanda who also operated the hotel at Mount Pisgah, several obituaries from members of the Sturdevant family,and news story about acourt case involving a dangerous railroad crossing in East Towanda.

The scrapbook is actually made from parts of two books, interesting in and of themselves, one placed inside the other. The inserted one is part of a 19th Century guide to the Western U.S.including informationon Nevada and California, Oregon and Washington, Utah, etc. The book that hosts this insert is an 1891 compilation of facts regarding the coal trade, distributed by a company in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. While only parts of the two books are here, and some of those pages covered bypasted clippings, the remaining pages are none-the-less interesting.

Of special note are 25 pages in the rear containing ads for coal mining companies, many in the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre areas. A few of the ads are for coal mining machinery.
