1910 LEATHER RIFLE SCABBARD By OTTO JOHNSON CLAYTON NEW MEXICO WESTERN AMERICANA:
$58.01

Rare and wonderful, ca1910 Hand Made Leather Rifle Scabbard with the mark of Otto Johnson Mercantile Company of Clayton, New Mexico.

We must first say that we know NOTHING about early Western Saddlery and even less about Rifle Scabbards. We recently purchased a small collection of early 20th century, maker marked Rifle Scabbards and we will try our best to describe them properly and also include numerous images of each Scabbard in the listings.

This outstanding, Western Americana Scabbard measures approx. 36\" long and 9\" wide at the upper opening. The Scabbard features a single row of stitching along one edge and leather toe piece which is also single stitched. There are four small straps mounted with rivets for use with saddle straps / sling and a pair of period straps that appear to have been with the Scabbard a VERY long time come along with it. The Scabbard carries an arch shaped, impressed mark that reads \"Otto Johnson Mercantile Co. / of Clayton, New Mexico\".

Cursory internet research turned up little information about this maker other than the fact that Otto Johnson ran a General Store in Clayton from sometime before 1910 to at least 1918. Any information about this maker would be greatly appreciated.

This rare and wonderful, Western Americana Rifle Scabbard is in good to very good condition with some surface wear to the leather as can be seen in the scans below. The single row of edge stitching is tight and intact while there is some loss to the stitching around the toe piece. The loops are soundly attached and the leather straps although surface worn, are sound. This Scabbard has seen some significant, honest use and shows age appropriate wear.

A very rare and wonderful, ca1910 Hand Made Leather Rifle Scabbard with the mark of Otto Johnson Mercantile Company of Clayton, New Mexico and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!

Important Notes about Shipping Charges:

The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a $1.00 \"packing fee\" - the $1.00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the $1.00 fee.
