The movie reel is anexcerpt from the 1927 film GALLOPING FURY featuring the famous HOOTGIBSON. Approximately 850 stillphotos with blank cards in between them are on theMutoscopereel. Becausethey are just a short segment of a full-feature movie, they are created fromabout fifty feet of regular movie film.

Introduced in 1895, theMutoscopewas one of the mostpopular and profitable machines in the penny arcade. Its popularity was sogreat that in just one location in New York City in 1903, the arcade owner tookin over $100,000. Marcus Loew, the theater chain magnate, apparently made hisfortune by setting upMutoscope and penny arcades. To this day, mutoscopesare considered icons of the bygone era of Penny Arcades.
