Handsome old 1929 Western Electric B-1 desk telephone - a model made only two years. It is wired with a 1937 anti-sidetone subset (your voice won't come back into your ears as with earlier subsets). The subset has a 1954 thermoplastic cover with no chips, cracks, or issues. The handset is without any chips, cracks, or issues. Its caps screw on and off with ease.
The handset cord has no fraying, so I retained it. However, I installed a new cord to the subset, woven like the original, and installed a new cloth-covered silver satin cord to plug in the unit. It has the RJ-11 clip-in plug, so it's plug-n-play ready. The base plate has a brand new suede leather cover, identical to the original. It won't scratch fine furniture.
The paint is original and very pretty. It has the typical wear in the cradle area, most of which is not noticeable when the handset it in place.The dial card is computer-generated and looks like an original. Sound transmission is excellent both ways. The 4H dial clicks and has asthma - the sound you LOVE in an old dial. The dial frame is copper, factory painted black, and sports the original dates on its rim. It pulses correctly at 10 pps and has been spot lubricated in the areas specified by Western Electric.
The twin brass bells of the mechanical ringer have a melodious sound that no crappy Chinese warbler can begin to emulate today. This is all analog and meant to be used on a traditional Ma-Belle land line. If you have a cable line, check with your provider to see if they support pulse dialing.
I've been restoring phones for 3 decades now. This one passes muster. This is a great alternative to a $600.00 price tag associated with show-quality phones redone to such a perfection that you'd be afraid to use them. Show quality cars are not meant to be driven. Show quality phones are not meant to be used. This one is meant to be used and enjoyed.
