1959 Electro-Voice Wolverine Alnico 12\" full-range—cone repairs but sounds great:
$39.95

Offered for your consideration is an Electro-Voice Wolverine LS-12 Alnico V magnet 12 inch full-range driver, USA-made in 1959. As per the EIA source/date code stamped on the blue flange gasket, “649913”, this speaker was made by Electro-Voice (649) in the 13th week of 1959; the year that E-V’s Wolverine first came on the market. So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this speaker is suitable for your needs.

This Electro-Voice LS-12 is clean, but only in fair condition. The ribbed paper cone, with ancillary whizzer cone for enhanced high frequency response, both had sustained edge-area cracks over the years. The former owner had tried to fix the cone cracks with what appears to be some type of shellac, perhaps even a cyanoacrylate (super glue), which I found unsatisfactory since several fissures had gone unattended.

Consequently, I secured the cracks—mainly from the back side but a few on front as well—with flexible yet strong craft glue; I left the previous repairs on the whizzer alone as they really couldn’t be improved. Unfortunately, there was no way to make the work look invisible, or even nice, the way I usually strive to do (since somebody else had already had a ‘go’ at it), but the repairs are quite sound now.

Otherwise, the futuristic-design speaker basket is in great shape with gray enamel that has no scratches, dings, or oxidation. Plus, the +/- terminals are sturdy, handy thumb screws instead of the .205” male spades most drivers have.

Most importantly, I tested the driver fully after the cone repairs and it sounds wonderful—fast, detailed midrange, clear highs approaching the audibility-limit, and strong low end response for the platform type. In the 1950-60’s this was considered a full-range driver; today we’d call it wide or extended-range. Plus, it has the Alnico magnet warmth of tone sought after by those “in the know” (the later mid 1960’s version of this Wolverine, the LS-12A, switched to a cost-saving ceramic magnet). What’s more, I tested the DC resistance at 5.9Ω, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket flange measures 12⅛” diameter, it stands 3¾” tall, and the mount holes are spaced 8⅛” adjacent / 11½” diagonal apart, c-t-c.

As pictured and described, thisElectro-Voice LS-12 Wolverine is offered at a reasonable price.
