7\' Lance whaling harpoon - nautical decor :
$89.00

Up for your consideration this 7\' decorative lance whaling harpoon would make a nice accent piece to your nautical rec room or office. The handle is an ash pole, kiln dried, 2\" in diameter with a minwax golden oak stain sealed with a coat of gloss urethane. The rope is 5/16\" pure manila whipped with marline cord. The tip is cast iron welded to a 7/16\" steel shaft.

The lance, also known as the killing iron, was the implement used to kill the whale after fastening to it with a harpoon. When the harpooner had securely fasteneda harpoon into the whale he changed positions in the whaleboat with the mate who had been in the stern steering the boat. Only the mate could kill the whale with the lance. Lances were usuallyabout 5\' in length as it had to penetrate to the whales vital organs.

The tip of this harpoon is an exact copy taken from a collection owned by Captain Joshua G. Baker, circa 1900. Captain Baker (1845 - 1910) who lived in South Dartmouth, MA was the skipper of the whaleship Reindeer from 1877 to 1891.
