A very Rare Edo period Odawara Chochin (Portable lantern) of the Tokugowa Shogunate bearing the Tokugowa Mon and the Hawk feathers of the Samurai.
The \"Hawk Feather”, was used as decoration to celebrate the moments of thriumph and victory, and also for special ceremonies such as New Years Eve. For some ancient clans it became one of the most important symbols in battle times.This is one of the most sophisticated types of Odawara Chochin lanterns made.
Beautifully created of Wash (handmade paper) copper and bamboo strips wound in a spiral. The paper is painted with Kakishibu (Persimmon Tannin juice) for waterproofing. And then hand painted with The Tokugowa Mon on one side in Red and the two hawk feathers in a black circle to the other.
The lamp is concertinaed and Encased in a beautiful brass hanging container pierced with 5 sakura flowers around a larger one in the lid that lifts to reveal the spike for the candle.The name comes from the inventor Jinemon in Odawara during the Kyoho period (1716-36)
It is also called futokoro Chochin as it is portable in the breast (futokoro) or in the sleeves of the kimono when one goes out and it was believed that they protected you from evil spirits.
A stunning and Early piece in excellent Original condition.
The paper does have the odd small tear.
