ABOUT THIS LISTING:

This listing is for 5 beads: 1 fancy striped Venetian good bead, (as it is called in Africa). It was manufactured in the 1800\'s - early 1900\'s in Venice.

And this bead set is complimented with 2, 3-layer early 1900\'s Venetian Chevron bead types, (multi-colored outer stripes with a white w/red core).

Plus 2 old small brown striped cane beads.

These beads have visited 3 continents in their lifetime & have an unknown history although we know that in the African trade beads have represented status, currency & position. The photos are a sample of what the buyer will receive. We have an all sales final/ no refund policy.

*CHEVRON BEAD STYLE HISTORY INFORMATION:

Chevrons were invented in Murano, Italy in the 1490\'s, & for hundreds of years since have been considered the aristocrat of beads. They are also known by the name of Star, Rosetta, Sun, Paternoster (our father\'s) bead. Bead makers in Murano were very secretive about their bead making techniques used to make these complicated beads. These compound tube drawn beads are made with many different layers & rods of colored glasses. They were & are still sliced, hot pinched, or ground round on the ends which reveal an intricate star pattern. They have been made in larger, (the size of your fist), & extremely smaller sizes, (like the ones in this listing), in varying colors & layers. The Venetians were & are famous for their production of many of the antique trade bead styles that went into the African & world bead trade.

In the 1500\'s Star/Chevron beads were widely traded into the Spanish New World. Especially Peru. After the Venetians lost their tight control of the bead making industry their was some production of the heat rounded Chevrons with the Dutch in the 1700\'s. Their were many, many millions of them manufactured since their birth in Venice. Many, many of these beads have been found in many parts of the United States & Canada, as well as many other places in the world. Discoveries of them in the Southwestern United States can be connected to the early Spanish expeditions.

They were traded with the Native American Indians on the North American Continent during the fur trade era. They were often used as decorations for their horse blanket/saddles or other tribal decorations, (similar to the camel blanket/saddle decorations that Chevrons were used for in Africa). Indians attached great spiritual meaning to their glass beads & incorporated them into their clothing & ritualistic lives.

*(Historical references to the above information: THE HISTORY OF BEADS, Dubin, L.S. & ARIZONA HIGHWAYS -July 1971 pg\'s, 10-37,The Enduring Intrique Of The Glass Trade Beads.)

There are still Chevrons being made today in different parts of the world. In China there is new productions of them & they are obviously newly made. There is also in China very well made copies of the older Venetians & only an expert can discern the difference. It is unfortunate but the new ones are being sold as if they are the older Venetians. Beware of fakes! In Venice & the United States there are some incredible examples of this glass work bead style being made by individual artisans. They are true collector pieces.
