Antique Viaticum (Last Rites Shadow Box) Circa 1920
Chalk Statue is copied from Michaelangelo\'s Pieta Statue of Mary holding the body of Jesus after the Crucifixion. This Statue is about 10 1/2 inches high and was hand painted.
The shadow that holds the statue is covered with glass. Reverse paint on the glass goes all around the box. There are two angels in the purple glass at the top on each side of the Gold Cross. Down the sides are two blue columns with white tops and a cross on each top. Across the bottom is \"Blessed Be Thy Holy Name\". Below the Shadow Box is a smaller box compartment that can be locked with a clasp. It has a print of the Last Supper taken from Leonardo da Vinci\'s famous painting.
Front door is held by a chain, making a Last Rites Altar.
Light blue paper on the inside of the door has a fancy design on the paper and the word \"VIATICUM\". Viaticum means \"Provision for the journey\". This would have held things that were necessary to perform the Last Rites on a dying person.
Measures 4-1/8\" deep x 13-1/8\" wide x 22-1/8\" high.
**this was originally built to be recessed into the wall however there is a wire if you wish to hang on the wall.
It is in great condition. It looks like the back cover was replaced previously.
