ANTIQUE LECTERN FLIP TOP BUTLERS HOSTESS DESK PODIUM ROYAL SCOTTISH SOCIETY ARTS:
$789.95

Here is an absolutely fabulous antique beautifully crafted large paneled Scottish pine lectern or podium with desk and cabinet space below, once used at the 16 Terrace Street address of the Royal Scottish Society for Arts, where the society maintained it\'s offices beginning 1929, following a move from their previous 117 George Street office, also there in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Society for Promoting Useful Arts in Scotland, was originally formed in 1821 and by 1841 the then Society of Arts for Scotland received it\'s royal charter, becoming the Royal Scottish Society of Arts or RSSF. The building at 16 Terrace St also housed the RSSF\'s affiliated group Edinburgh Photographic Society who moved with the RSSF from George Street. The mission of the RSSA initially was concerned with the fields we would now describe as science, technology, engineering and manufacture but were then know as useful arts, but today the society aims to showcase Scotland\'s science, technology and innovation, primarily through monthly lecture programming, excursions, promotion of Honorary Fellows and the awardring of medals. The lecture programme is given by excellent public speakers who are distinguished in their fields of study, on topics covering a wide range of scientific and technical issues, all pertinent to Scotland today (*info from RSSF website).
This wonderful early twentieth century podium with flip top desk with room for storage below, with a large bureau drawer and two shelves of open cabinet space behind the two lower doors, and with the shipping tag going to the Royal Scottish Society of Arts, 16 Terrace Street, Edinburgh was recently imported from the UK through Edinburgh, Scotland. According to the carriage tag, the piece was manufactured and shipped by RW Forsyth, Complete Outfitters for Gentleman and their Sons, Princes Street and St Andrews Square , Edinburgh. It is in very nice age appropriate condition, commensurate with it\'s historical experience, as described above and detailed clearly in my photographs. It is a wonderful piece of furniture is paneled on three sides and would make a lovely addition to any lecture hall, church or other educational or performance setting needing a quality built lectern or podium from which speakers can present.
This terrific lectern desk stands 49 1/2 inches tall at the front of the podium, with the flip top desk slanting down to a height of 45 inches tall across the back where the speaker would stand, and it measures 36 1/2 inches wide by 27 inches front to back. It has a prop stick within to hold open the flip top which measures 32 1/2 inches wide by 20 1/2 inches tall, with lots of room for presenter notes on the 34 1/2 inch by 25 inch top surface when down, and storage space within below, 10 inches in depth decreasing to 6 1/2 inches deep, and with small shelves and cubbies across the front deeper section as shown. There is a large drawer below the flip top desk and it\'s storage space, 30 inches wide by 25 inches front to back and 5 inches deep. Below the large drawer there is open cabinet space behind two doors, measuring 34 1/2 inches wide by 21 1/2 inches front to back and 24 3/4 inches tall. The shelf running across the width of the cabinet splits this space in half, leaving 12 inches clearance above and 12 inches clearance below the shelf within the cabinet. Together, the beauty of this well constructed Scottish pine cabinet and the versatility of having the podium with desk storage, drawer and cabinets below for storage of teaching or lecture materials, make this piece, especially with it\'s historical provenance, a particularly special find.
Please send me your city and zip code and I will get a confirmed shipping quote for you, prior to end of sale if you like. This terrific early twentieth century Scottish lectern used by the Royal Scottish Society of the Arts,is located in Charleston, SC 29414 and you are also welcome to either pick up the desk or make your own shipping arrangements. Please do be aware most freighters require you allow 6-8 weeks to receive your shipping, though many, particularly my regional independent shippers often deliver closer to 3-4 weeks from purchase. I work with several firms who provide full insurance and in-home delivery, and who allow me to send them pick up info and preliminary delivery information after a purchase, then reverse the quote to the buyer so they can finalize their own delivery details and make payment for the shipping directly to the shipper. In my experience it helps when customers pay shippers directly by keeping shippers directly accountable to the individual receiving the merchandise, all the way through to delivery. In addition, I occasionally have some additional very economical shipping options, particularly traveling up the east coast, with friends and colleagues of mine from the antiques trade with vehicles appropriate for deliveries who travel to shows and sales and often have room in their vehicles to make deliveries for mealong the wayto offset the cost of some of their travel. I will also let you know if I have one of these type shipping options available to you as well.
Please visit my store to see the wide variety of fine antique and vintage items, from furniture to smalls and unique collectibles including figurines, many sets and individual pieces of fine European bone china and porcelain, to Asian treasures and Americana collectibles, all of which are have available through my separate sales.
