ANTIQUE VIOLIN \"Andreas Guarnerius fecit Cremona Sub titulo Santa Teresia 1689\":
$315.00

This ANTIQUE VIOLIN has a label inside stating \"Andreas Guarnerius fecit Cremona Sub titulo Santa Teresia 1689\" (or possibly 1684). To us, the violin is quite attractive and has a beautifully figured back.
We think this violin was one of the many that were made in Germany or Czechoslovakia in the late 1800\'s, but we do not know for sure and are not experts in this field. The case and cover were made in U.S.A. Please read the following and inspect the pictures carefully.
Known HistoryIn the early 1950\'s, my family lived in a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. My sister and I took violin lessons from a Mr. Carl Nagle, who was first violin with the St. Louis Symphony. As lessons went on, my parents had Mr. Nagle procure better instruments for us. This is the violin he found for me, and he said it had tone that \"could knock a house down,\" but I was never very good at it. My sister was a better player and was being groomed to be first violin in the youth symphony. But Mr. Nagle died of cancer and we moved away from St. Lewis. This violin has been in my possession but spent most of the past 55 years or so in the case.
ConditionThe violin is in very good condition for an antique with the exception of the following: The bridge is held together with some sort of tape and needs replacing. It needs new strings (two are broken or missing). There are some marks in the finish on the top and in the area where the bridge sits, and a scratch in the finish on the back a little over an inch long. There are a couple of dark lines in the top. I\'m not sure if that could indicate repaired cracks, as they are under the coat of finish. One of the points by the waist has a small chip.
BowThe case contains one bow that seems appropriate. Old, if not the age of the violin, it has been well used, as evidenced by the handle area (see picture), but there seem to be only two of the horse-hairs that were broken. I have not turned the tension adjustment knob but I know that was working a few years back; I just don\'t want to risk damage because it seems very stiff.
CaseThe violin has a nice old hard case, but I think newer than the violin. The case zips into a protective fabric cover. The case is lined with a beautiful plush material. It has two storage compartments, one with a piece of old rosin inside. There is storage for two bows, but I never had more than the one that is still with it. Before I got it the case had some treatment applied to scuff marks on part of the back bottom edge, that you don\'t notice unless you look close. On the hinges is stamped \"Made in USA.\"
The zippered cover is custom fit to the case and made from a durable fabric. There is a tag under the handle with a leather-framed pocket where I had my name and address. A cloth label inside says, \"Shut-Tite\" and \"REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.\", \"TAILOR MADE COVERS\", \"MADE TO FIT-FIT TO CARRY\" The cover is lined with a gold-colored plush and shows minor signs of wear on the outside.
Please inspect the pictures carefully. We have more pictures that would not fit on the listing that we can email if you like. Be sure to ask questions well before the sale ends.
