Before Bachmann jumped into the On30 18\' freight car market, we built thousands of custom scratch built narrow gauge cars like this one. Adding to the great lineup of Bachmann Spectrum On30 18\' shorty cars we custom painted, lettered & weathered this highly detailed On30 18\' Gondola #138 that could also be used as a maintenance of way (MOW) car. We started this model with one of Bachmann\'s brand new spectacularly detailed On30 18\' cars #26531. The car was completely unassembled and carefully repainted inside & out, lettered #138 and weathered so none of the car markings were disturbed.
Narrow gauge gondola cars were some of the hardest working cars in revenue service and were often brought into towns along the Colorado River during flood season to help remove mud from flooded cities. The sides on our model were painted yellow to simulate replacement sides commonly found on wood cars like this (the car sides typically wore out first). Zoom in on the car sides and you can see the scrapes, rubs and paint chips from years of service. The finished model has several coats of clear matte medium (DullCote) with some acrylic streaking over it, so it will look good (or would that be bad) for many years to come.
